Criminology Outreach Program

Many Orange County students finish high school, but never pursue a college education. For many of these students, college is too costly and they simply do not explore financial aid options. Additionally, these students have not had the benefit of a family member or even a friend’s sibling attend college. UC Irvine Social Ecology students, many of whom are first generation college students, are serving as community mentors to high school students. They encourage and expose them to the benefits of attending college. These mentors are bright, highly motivated, and committed college students who act as a role model for the youth in COP.

Special Events

On November 1 and 2 students and faculty from UCI and the Institute of Comparative Law, Waseda University, one of Japan's top universities had a joint graduate conference on crime, law, and society. This was an inaugural conference of doctoral students and graduate students from UCI provided an opportunity to present their crime research on a broad range of topics including corporate governance and economic crime; individual lawbreaking; regulation; sanctioning issues; and legal theory and practice, and to discuss their work with foreign delegates over a two-day period. The common thread among these presentations was their analyses and implications for comparative and international work in their respective areas.

Alumni & Friends

The School of Social Ecology has over 13,000 alumni. The number of students who graduate with a Social Ecology degree increases every year. This year, the School held two ceremonies –graduating more than 800 students!

Our graduates are applying a multi-disciplinary perspective to the analysis of community problems, ranging from atypical child development to urban design, addressing issues of violence and crime. Some are in public service. Many are influencing social and public policy.
