Change of Major Information for New Students

New Freshman

New freshman wanting to change majors to any major in the School of Social Ecology or College of Health Sciences may do so before classes begin in Fall. To change majors students are encouraged to attend the Student Parent Orientation Program (SPOP) advising session for the major they are interested in changing to. New freshman can change to the new major during the SPOP advising session they attend.

If you have already attended SPOP and decided to change majors afterward you can do so by following these steps:

  • Step 1 - Review an online version of the orientation information that the School of Social Ecology presented during SPOP.  The orientation information can be found HERE.  Look below the SPOP dates for the Summer 2008 Freshman Orientation Slideshow.
  • Step 2 - Make a 30-minute appointment with an Academic Counselor in Social Ecology before fall classes start on Thursday September 25th.  Your major will be changed during the appointment and any questions you may have will be answered.

Students that do not follow the steps above to change majors before fall classes begin can still change majors by following the criteria that has been established for continuing students - which can be found HERE.

Transfer Students

Transfer students wanting to change majors can do so if they meet certain criteria. Each major in the School of Social Ecology and the College of Health Sciences has established criteria that can allow a student to change majors before classes begin in Fall. Transfer students wanting to change majors using the criteria listed below must do so before classes begin in Fall.

Students that do not meet the criteria listed below upon admission to UCI must attend the orientation session for the major in which you were admitted and pursue a change of major as a continuing student. Students that do not meet the criteria can still change majors by following the criteria that has been established for continuing students - which can be found HERE.

Major Change Criteria for the School of Social Ecology:

  • Criminology, Law and Society: a 3.0 overall transfer GPA
  • Psychology and Social Behavior: a 3.0 overall transfer GPA
